Getting ready to start packing?
Here are some of our helpful packing tips.
Furniture
Before you move your furniture into storage, make sure you empty out all the contents. This will help protect the shelving and the furniture’s structure, and it also makes the pieces lighter and easier to carry around. You also need to give your furniture a thorough clean before moving it into Self Storage, especially items where there may be food crumbs, such as your tables, chairs, and couches.
Dishes & Glassware
Your dishes and glassware need to be protected during transport and storage. Make sure you wrap each item individually with plain packing paper (avoid newspaper, as the ink can transfer and make permanent stains). As you pack the individually wrapped items into boxes, make sure you pack any gaps in the box with more paper or linen – this will help keep everything still. Use fragile tape or stickers on the outside of these boxes.
HiFi & Television Gear
If you still have the original boxes for your HiFi and television gear, try and use them during the storage period. Alternatively, each item should be individually wrapped with protective wrapping, such as bubble wrap, and stored inside high-quality boxes and cartons. Like with the dishes and glassware, make sure you fill any empty spaces in the boxes with extra packing materials. Items with screens need to be stored upright to prevent damage.
Appliances
If you’re moving your fridge and freezer into Kincumber Self Storage, make sure you empty it, defrost it, and dry it well before you move it into your storage unit. Any hint of moisture left in your appliances can create mould and mildew. Once you’ve moved your appliances into your unit, try and store them with the door slightly ajar to keep them fresh. Other appliances should be covered in protective blankets to avoid damage.
Mirrors & Fragile Items
Your mirrors and other fragile items are usually the most difficult to pack and store because they’re so breakable. These items need to be wrapped well in protective material, such as bubble wrap. Try and move your fragile items into your storage unit last so there’s less risk of these items getting buried amongst or damaged by your other possessions. Store these items upright rather than lying flat to help prevent them from cracking.
Machinery & Mowers
Before you move your mower or other machinery items into Self Storage, make sure you drain the oil. This will help reduce the risk of damage to your other things due to leaks, and it also helps prevent fire hazards. Use a piece of cardboard or old carpet underneath the item to help further protect your other belongings from leaks and stains. Giving these items a wash before storage can also help prevent unwanted smells inside your unit.
